Family Mensa at Lancaster Castle, 10th June 2018

Join Family Mensa for a visit to a castle that’s stood for almost a millennium - in Lancashire’s ancestral seat of power.

Lancaster Castle, 12:30, Sunday 10th June 2018.

And so to Lancaster Castle - sometime Roman fort, Plantagenet fortress, and dwelling at Her Majesty’s pleasure. Now open to the public, we’ll have opportunity to tour this magnificent Medieval monument, and learn of its long and eventful history.

This Grade 1 Listed Building occupies a city-centre hilltop location - all the better to protect it from usurpers, marauders, and Yorkshiremen leading groups of Mensan Families. TOGETHER WE SHALL HAVE VENGEAN... fun, together we shall have fun.

As with all Family Mensa events, non-members accompanying a Mensan are very welcome - be they parents, grandparents, siblings or otherwise.

Tour Tickets (available on the day)

  • Adults £8
  • Concessions (children, students, over 65s) £6.50
  • Family £20

Family tickets are flexible: two adults and up to any two concessions, one adult and any three concessions, or a group consisting of four concessions, all qualify.

We’ll meet at 12:30, outside the main entrance. I’ll be holding the Mensa logo on a white piece of paper, whilst wishing, inwardly, that I’d be bold enough to bring the white rose of Yorkshire, to plant prominently on the grounds.

Latecomers remain very welcome, just email me in advance and I'll provide my number, so you can be to be united with the group.

I’d also be grateful if you could send me an email to let me know you are attending, to james.o@mensanorthwest.com. It will assist me in the planning - and ensure I don't try head in without you.

Getting there:

By Train - Lancaster castle is located only 300 meters from Lancaster Railway Station.
The station is on the West Coast Mainline and offers regular services both
locally and nationally.

By Car - Located near to Lancaster city centre, the castle is signposted from the M6
Motorway. If travelling from the north visitors should exit the M6 at Junction
34, if travelling from the south they should exit at Junction 33.

Parking - Visitors to the castle are advised to make use of one of Lancaster’s larger pay and display car parks. There are 3 public car parks within 300m of the Castle entrance. These are at the Railway Station (LA1 5NW), Parksafe (LA1 1EQ) and Dallas Road (LA1 1LD). Car parks are well signed from all arterial routes into the city centre. Please use the postcodes for sat-nav assistance.

Additional Information:

Visitors are advised that the castle is located on top of a hill and that
approaches from all directions are steep.

Visitors should also note that some of the ‘fingerposts’ around the city
centre are out of date and currently point you towards the old castle entrance
at the rear of the building. The visitor entrance is now the main gateway to
the castle at the front of the building.
