Family Mensa at MOSI, 15th April 2018

Announcing the inaugural event for Family Mensa North West.

Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester, 13:00, Sunday 15th April 2018.

In defiance of chronology, I thought we’d start with a taste of the future. We’ll all have heard how robots may imminently be rendering us redundant, running our lives and, inevitably, enslaving us in a horrifying post-apocalyptic future. So let’s form happy memories to cling on to, of the good-old-days when robots said ‘clank’ and ‘beep’ and hardly ever hunted us for sport.

The Robots exhibit promises to blend fiction and reality, from ‘Maria’, of the 1927 film ‘Metropolis’, to the latest advances in automation and AI.

Then, to reignite our sense of hope, we’ll take a look at one of the pinnacles of current human endeavour - the Soyuz descent module used by Tim Peake, on his journey home from the International Space Station. The Soyuz module speaks for itself – a genuine piece of modern history.

We’ll meet at 13:00, outside the front entrance to the Museum of Science and Industry.

RSVP on Facebook.

Tickets to the 'Robots' exhibit can be purchased on the day, and cost £8 for adults, £5 for children, with under 6s free. Family discounts are also available. The rest of the museum is free, including the historic descent module.

If you’re travelling into the city from the motorway, head towards the M60 ring road around Manchester, and look out for the brown tourist signs directing you to the Museum of Science and Industry.

The postcode for your GPS satnav is M3 4FP.

Park all day for £7 at the Park Avenue RCP car park (8 Albion Street M1 5LN) when you validate your ticket at the museum information desk.

Alternatively, the Museum is located close to the Deansgate rail station and tram stop.

As I appreciate I’ll be meeting many of you for the first time, I’ll distinguish myself by standing beneath an umbrella, despite the (hopefully) warm spring sunshine. In the event of rain, the umbrella will be open on the ground, and I’ll drip sulkily through the museum, bemoaning the short-sightedness of my plan, in one of the UK’s wettest cities.
